Filminute 2012: And the winners are...

LONDON/BUCHAREST/TORONTO, October 10, 2012 – Awards for the 7th edition of Filminute, the international one-minute film festival, were announced today. UK director Ant Blade's dramatic and hilarious animation CHOP CHOP took top honours with the jury, while fellow Brit Ben Jacobson's comic thriller, CANDY CRIME was the favourite selected by Filminute’s voting public.

The 7-member international jury which included Prasoon Joshi, Radu Jude, Arjun Basu, Lenora Hume & Gyorgy Karpati, gave animation its strongest year ever at the festival with Best Filminute as well as 3 of the 5 Jury Commendations going to the animations M/W 9/11 (USA), A HERO'S TALE (UK), and Ant Blade’s second film in the competition, WILDEBEEST (UK). The moving and beautiful Dutch documentary SARINA and the darkly amusing Lithuanian film CUT! rounded out the jury-commended films at Filminute 2012.

The race for the People's Choice award at Filminute 2012 was close right up to the finish with CANDY CRIME emerging as the winner, followed by CIUDAD HELSING (Argentina) and THE KEY (Canada). Audiences from more than 130 countries tuned in to watch this year’s collection.

The Top Rated film for 2012 was won by Georgian director Tamta Gabrichidze. Her stark and provocative film LADY I received an impressive 4.8 rating (out of 5) from the public.

“Comedy-driven animations and challenging dramatic works stood out at Filminute 2012,” said Filminute executive director and head of jury, John Ketchum. “It was also exciting to see the festival’s footprint continue to grow with particularly strong gains in the east - including Lithuania, Georgia, Turkey and Russia – as well as in South America, where Argentina, Colombia and Mexico continue to produce more one-minute films and bigger audiences.

The 7th edition of the popular online-based short film festival saw social media again demonstrate its power and reach. The festival saw a dramatic increase in the number of festival mentions, reviews of films, and embeds of films on websites, blogs and online media around the world. “Increasingly, independent filmmakers are grasping the power that social media gives them to market their films. Filminute provides an ideal test ground — arguably what works for a one-minute film can work for a feature film when it comes to social media. Both the filmmakers and our festival saw a great return on our social media investments this year,” said co-executive director Sabaa Quao.

Every year, throughout the month of September, Filminute presents an extraordinary array of 25 films online and across a variety of media for festival-goers around the world to enjoy, share and discuss.

Filminute 2012 Launch Press Release

LONDON/BUCHAREST/TORONTO, September 6, 2012 – The 7th edition of Filminute, the international one-minute film festival, officially launches this week. 15 countries are represented among the festival’s 25 competing finalists.

The 15 countries represented at Filminute 2012 are Argentina, Belgium (2), Brazil, Canada, France, Georgia, Germany, Israel, Lithuania, Netherlands (2), Russian Federation (2), Sweden, Turkey, UK (5), and USA (4). Five countries have made the shortlist for the first time: Brazil, Georgia, Israel, Lithuania, and Sweden.

Of the 25 films in competition, 6 are animations, and 2 are documentaries.

Filminute co-founder and Head of Jury John Ketchum has once again convened an international, experienced, contemporary, and witty jury: Sundance & Sarajevo award-winning Romanian film director, Radu Jude
; Indian “Ad Guru” and award-winning film lyricist, Prasoon Joshi; FIPRESCI Vice President & Hungarian film critic, György Kárpáti; Shut Up! Cartoons producer and long-time Walt Disney Television Animation Senior Vice-President, Lenora Hume; and award-winning writer and superstar Twitter storyteller Arjun Basu.

The “Best Filminute” prize and 5 commendations are awarded by Filminute’s jury. The public at large is invited to view, share, comment upon and rate all 25 films. Each film fan is also entitled to a single vote to put toward the film they feel is most deserving of Filminute’s People’s Choice award.

“We expect social media to continue to play an increasing role in the growth of the festival,” says Filminute co-founder Sabaa Quao. “Not only can filmmakers take direct control over the marketing of their film, the sharing and discussion of the film between the filmmakers and their audiences is a natural marketing driver. Much of what a filmmaker learns to do here is applicable to learning how to better market their feature length projects.”

The 7th edition of the festival also features a more accessible website and an expanded pool of global media partners who will all be choosing their top picks from the festival to screen for their audiences.

Every year, throughout the month of September, Filminute presents an extraordinary array of 25 films online for festival-goers around the world to enjoy and discuss. The Filminute winners and awards will be announced on October 9.

#SPAIN #NETHERLANDS AND #AUSTRALIA TAKE TOP AWARDS @FILMINUTE 2011

Narrative loops and stunningly powerful performances inspire the winning films at Filminute, the international one-minute film festival.

TORONTO/BUCHAREST/LONDON, 6 October 2011 – After a month of online screenings, Filminute 2011 announced the award winners for this year’s film festival. LOOP, a smart and skillfully directed film by Spain’s Aritz Moreno, has been awarded BEST FILMINUTE honours by the seven-member international jury. The film’s unique ability to reproduce itself and play with time while remaining highly entertaining wowed the jury and the audience. This film also marks Spain‘s first big win at Filminute.

The online festival audience, each responsible for one vote and representing 132 countries, selected the film OBLIVION for the People's Choice Award. OBLIVION, a film from the Netherlands, narrowly beat out films from South Africa and Australia in a record year for online engagement and voting at the festival.

The top-rated film was NO MAN’S LAND, which features a brilliant and jarring performance by Australian actor Mirko Grillini. The film averaged a 5-star rating — a first for any film in the festival’s history.

The San Sebastián–based director of LOOP, Aritz Moreno, presents film fans with a protagonist that is both dead and alive at the same time. Beautiful camera work and editing come together with a story that serves up a poignant commentary on time and routine. The many subtleties in direction and the stellar sound design also contribute to a film that one juror summed up as “begging to be watched over and over and over.”

John Ketchum, Filminute’s co-founder and head of jury, commented about LOOP, “In a year brimming with powerful, masterfully made films, LOOP still managed to stand out as the favourite — a testament to its originality, subtlety and the way it rewards the viewer.” The film also features one of the most visceral moments of any film in the collection. Interestingly, a glance through the festival’s very active and informative Facebook page shows a great number of other filmmakers themselves awed by what Moreno was able to accomplish in this film.

OBLIVION won the People’s Choice award by generating a base of fans from both near and far beyond the Netherlands. Director Shariff Nasr raises our attention to issues around patient care, aging, and Alzheimer’s in his film. Dutch actor Raymond Thiry’s performance is as touching as it is harrowing, as the film’s protagonist struggles to comprehend where he is and what is happening to him.

“Marko Grillini (NO MAN’S LAND) and Raymond Thiry (OBLIVION) highlight what we have always believed possible in a one-minute film. They delivered memorable performances that stick with you long beyond the 60-second constraint of the film,” says festival co-founder and head of jury John Ketchum. We know of several directors this year who patiently sought out the best actors they could find and the results are clearly stunning.”

The Filminute 2011 jury awarded commendations to five films, ranked in the following order:

REVERIE (Belgium) Directed by Jaro Minne
Innocence and love shine through in this film. The child actors draw the audience into the dream of a united humanity and we are startled by the outcome.

OBLIVION (Netherlands) Directed by Shariff Nasr
A powerful and masterfully directed film that touches on how we might feel to be isolated, abandoned, and powerless. This film generated more reactions and ratings than many other films combined.

HAMBURGZ (USA) Directed by Jordan Schmelzer
This is a delightful heist film that references the photo-montage technique made famous by Chris Marker’s 1962 film La Jetée. Such stylish and cool drama — over a hamburger.

NO MAN’S LAND (Australia) Directed by Dominic Jackson Chambers
We are treated to a spare, mesmerizing, and shocking performance in this film. If there were a Best Actor prize to be awarded at Filminute 2011, Australian actor Mirko Grillini would surely be in the running.

DOT IN THE LINE (Pakistan) Directed by Basir Mahmood
Part contemporary art, part philosophical exposition, the director takes the audience for a dramatic and surprising run before landing us in the middle of a very familiar story.

This year’s award winners were selected from a lineup of 25 films from 18 countries, ranging from Argentina to India to the USA. The shortlist of 25 was narrowed from a field of more than 2000 film and animation screenings and submissions. The range of countries participating and stories presented affirm Filminute’s dedication to levelling the playing field in film. Indeed, no country has a monopoly on great stories. Many of these films immediately inspire an immediate second and third viewing.
